How does echocardiography visualize heart function?

Echocardiography uses ultrasound waves to create real-time images of the heart's structure and function. It shows heart chambers, valves, blood flow patterns, and wall motion, providing comprehensive cardiac assessment without radiation exposure.

Medical scans

What are the different types of echocardiograms?

Transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) images through the chest wall, transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) uses a probe in the esophagus for clearer images, stress echocardiogram monitors heart function during exercise, and 3D echocardiogram provides detailed volumetric analysis.

Medical scans

How does echocardiography guide cardiac treatment?

Echocardiogram results help diagnose heart conditions, assess treatment effectiveness, monitor disease progression, and guide surgical planning. It's essential for valve disease evaluation, heart failure management, and post-surgical follow-up care.

What are the different types of echocardiogram scan?

There are several types of echocardiogram scans. They provide valuable information about your heart's structure, function, and any abnormalities that may be present.

Transthoracic Echocardiogram

Transthoracic Echocardiogram (TTE)

The standard echocardiogram uses a handheld device (transducer) placed on your chest to send sound waves to your heart. This non-invasive procedure provides detailed images of your heart's structure and function, helping to detect abnormalities in heart chambers, valves, and blood flow.

Starting from £250

Transesophageal Echocardiogram

Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE)

For this procedure, a specialised probe with a transducer is guided down your throat and into your esophagus. This allows for clearer images of your heart since the esophagus is directly behind the heart, providing superior visualization of heart valves and structures.

Starting from £350

Stress Echocardiogram

Stress Echocardiogram

This test combines an echocardiogram with exercise or medication to see how your heart functions under stress. Images are taken before and after your heart is stressed, helping to identify areas of the heart that aren't receiving adequate blood flow, which may indicate coronary artery disease.

Starting from £400

3D Echocardiogram

3D Echocardiogram

This advanced form of echocardiography creates three-dimensional images of your heart's structures. It provides more detailed views of the heart, particularly useful for assessing complex heart conditions, valve problems, and congenital heart defects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about echocardiogram scans

No, you don't need a GP referral to book an echocardiogram through Skannr. Our platform supports self-referral, allowing you to book directly based on your personal health needs. However, it's always beneficial to discuss your symptoms with a healthcare professional who can provide guidance on whether an echocardiogram is appropriate for your situation.
A standard transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) is completely painless and non-invasive. You may feel slight pressure as the technician presses the transducer against your chest to get clear images, but this shouldn't be painful. For a transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE), you'll receive a mild sedative, and while it may be slightly uncomfortable, it shouldn't be painful. Stress echocardiograms involve exercise, which may cause some fatigue but not pain.
With Skannr, you typically receive your echocardiogram results within 3-5 working days after your scan. The images from your scan are reviewed by a specialist cardiologist who prepares a detailed report. In urgent cases, results can sometimes be expedited. Your results will be securely delivered to you electronically through your patient portal.
For an echocardiogram, it's best to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily removed or adjusted. You'll need to expose your chest for the procedure, so wearing a button-up shirt or top may be convenient. For a stress echocardiogram, wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes suitable for exercise. Avoid wearing jewelry, especially necklaces, as these may interfere with the scan.
For a standard transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE), you can drive immediately after the procedure as it doesn't involve any sedation. However, if you're having a transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE), you'll receive sedation and will need someone to drive you home afterward. You should not drive for at least 24 hours after a TEE. For a stress echocardiogram, you may feel tired after the exercise component, so consider having someone drive you if possible.

Gold star! I was recommended SKANNR after not knowing where to turn in my search of a diagnosis on a long lasting injury that has taken nearly a year to get anywhere near a scan with the nhs. The same day I booked a scan at a local centre I was called by Skannr.
